Project R.O.S.E. (Recycled Oil Saves Energy) Appreciates
Support to Install Used Motor Oil Collection Tanks

Previous Races:

As a result of the 2000 race, nine used motor oil collection tanks were placed in Geneva County, Morgan County, Tallapoosa County, Cullman County, and in Fairhope. In addition, one serves the Tennessee Valley as a portable tank to collect oil from county fairs and other events in the area. "Without the assistance of our contributors, participants, and volunteers, this would have not been possible," says Charlotte Nix, Race Director. "Project R.O.S.E. is very proud of this accomplishment and looks forward to additional tank placements in the future."

Proceeds from the 2001 race allowed Project R.O.S.E. to place eight used motor oil collection tanks in Randolph County, where we collaborated with the Upper Tallapoosa Watershed Commission (UTWC). The UTWC organized a contest from Nov. 2001 to April 2002 and awarded prize money to the school that collected the most used oil (see this article.) In addition, one tank was placed at Mobile Bay in the Weeks Bay Estuary.

52 recycling sites have been established since the 5K race held on March 1, 2003 to raise funds for tank placement. Nineteen 275-gallon tanks were placed from the funds raised from that race, while the remaining 33 sites were provided by volunteer organizations cooperating with Project R.O.S.E.

Since May 2004, Project R.O.S.E. has added 54 new recycling locations to our database. Three tanks were donated to the City of Orange Beach in the wake of Hurricane Ivan for petroleum waste disposal at area marinas. In addition, numerous educational programs for Girl Scouts, vocational schools, and teacher conferences were conducted across the state.

Project R.O.S.E. learned in May 2004 that the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs would no longer fund the program due to their own shrinking budget. Fortunately, another state agency stepped up and provided administrative support to keep the program going until more permanent funding could be located. We were left, however, with few resources for public education and outreach programs. In the past, race proceeds were used to purchase and establish used oil collection tanks for rural locations in Alabama. Support for the Eighth Annual "Run for the Roses" 5K Race determines not only tank placement but future public education and outreach programs.

Project R.O.S.E. appreciates our sponsors and race participants. Your support has allowed us to establish many collection sites and conduct numerous educational programs that otherwise would not have been possible, especially in rural areas of the state. We look forward to your continued support as we persevere.
