Here are some pictures taken during a presentation by Project R.O.S.E. to the Tombigbee Council, Girl Scouts of America, January 25, 2003 in the Tom Bevill Building on the UA campus. A similar presentation was done on February 1, 2003 to the Cahaba Girl Scout Council during the Cahaba Girl Scout Math and Science Fair held at the corporate headquarters for Alabama Power Company. The next such presentation is scheduled on September 13, 2003, to the North Alabama Girl Scout Council at the Bankhead National Forest.

Welcome! Girl Scouts have an opportunity to learn more about the environment and earn their Oil-Up Merit Badge. Charlotte Nix, Assistant Coordinator of Project R.O.S.E., demonstrates how used motor oil affects wildlife. Girls spot an oil sheen in a nearby pond. They learn the sheen is from motor oil coming from surrounding parking lots after a hard rain.

A group works on "cleaning up" an oil spill. Girls learn different techniques for cleaning a spill and how difficult it can be. Sheri Powell, Project R.O.S.E. Coordinator, demonstrates everyday items that are made from petroleum. Girls learn how used motor oil flows underground when poured on the ground, or into rivers, lakes or streams.

Girls work feverishly to contain an "oil spill!" A chemical engineering student discusses different careers in the petroleum industry, as well as which country produces the most oil for the United States. The Oil-Up Merit Badge these girls have been working so diligently for!
