Walker’s Bent and
Dent joins oil recycling effort

Rockford—“Residents of Coosa
County now have three locations at which to recycle used motor oil,” said
Charlotte Nix, assistant coordinator of Project R.O.S.E. (Recycled Oil Saves
Energy), Alabama’s used motor oil education outreach program located in the
Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
The July 11, 2003 issue of the Coosa County News outlined
the need for recycling locations in the county and an appeal was made to assist
Project R.O.S.E in placing collection tanks in the area.
“Project R.O.S.E. was pleased to have Robert Walker
volunteer his store for a used motor oil collection site”, Nix said. “Volunteers don’t come knocking at our door
very often. We appreciate Mr. Walker
calling us. Our state depends on many
volunteer businesses that accept motor oil for recycling.”
The tank is located on the lot next to the Bent and Dent
behind the fireworks structure.
Used motor oil is insoluble, slow to degrade and can
contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to plants, animals, and humans alike.
“The only way to properly dispose of used motor oil is to
recycle it,” Nix said. “People don’t
realize the harm caused my improper disposal.”
Improper disposal of used motor oil can degrade soil and
contaminate ground and surface waters.
The amount of oil in a single oil change (approximately one gallon), can
ruin one million gallons of fresh water, the equivalent of a year’s supply of
water for 50 people.
Other oil recycling drop-off tanks are located at Windsor
Tire on Jackson Street in Rockford and Hornby’s Tire Service at 155 S. Main
Street in Goodwater.
