Local Automotive Center helps the environment

“May’s Automotive Center in Union Springs has volunteered to accept do-it-yourself (DIY) used motor oil for recycling”, said Charlotte Nix, Assistant Coordinator for Project R.O.S.E. (Recycled Oil Saves Energy), the Alabama used motor oil education outreach program located in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

“Used motor oil can contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to humans, plants, and animals.  Used motor oil sticks to everything from sand to bird feathers and when improperly disposed can contaminate ground and surface water.  Just one gallon of used motor oil can contaminate a million gallons of fresh water,” said Nix.  “Recycling is the only proper disposal method.”

“May’s Automotive Center is the only DIY used motor oil recycling location in Bullock County we’re aware of,” said Nix.  “Project R.O.S.E. would like to see additional sites established in Bullock County and in other areas of Alabama.   Citizens need to understand the importance of recycling and collection sites need to be convenient,” Nix said.  “Every drop counts.”

“By accepting used motor oil for recycling, May’s Automotive is providing a great community service to citizens of Bullock County.   It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the environment clean,” said Nix.   May’s Automotive is located at 102 Martin Luther King Boulevard and is open Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Used motor oil is accepted in small quantities during business hours.  Used motor oil should never be mixed with any other substance.
